Remember to factor in the cost of your troubles. For example, pulling a load through a congested metropolitan area (e.g., Miami, New York) adds difficulty and should cost more. Lastly, remember that once you deliver the load, you need to find a load nearby or get back home. The cost of deadhead miles can easily kill your profits.

Step 4: Run the back office efficiently

Running a successful trucking company requires a well-thought-out back office. The type of back office you have depends on the size of your business. Obviously, a small fleet has more back office needs than a single owner-operator.

Determine how you want the office to run. Go through the processes and ensure they make sense. The trucking business runs on efficiency. And those with the most efficient process, among other things, grow.

Step 5: Avoid cash flow problems

Most trucking companies experience cash flow problems at one time or another. You can rest assured that they will always arrive at the worst time.
